Our analyser readings have drifted against controls. Where do we start?

Usually the lamp, the flow path or the pipettor. Optical sources lose output with running hours long before they fail, so the reading falls off gradually. We measure lamp output, check the flow path for blockage and air, verify pipettor volume, then recalibrate. Replacing reagent lots first is the common wasted step.

Our blood bank refrigerator alarms at night but reads normal in the morning. Why?

That pattern is a door gasket, a failing defrost cycle or a probe reading a different point from where the samples sit. It is found by logging temperature at several positions over a full cycle rather than by looking at the display. A refrigerator that alarms intermittently is telling you something real.

How often should a biosafety cabinet be tested?

Airflow velocity and containment every six months, and after any filter change or relocation. HEPA filters load progressively; the blower compensates until it cannot, and the cabinet fails containment before anything visible happens. UV lamp output should be measured rather than assumed from whether the lamp lights.
